Hockey at Camp Winaukee: From the Floor to the Rink

At Camp Winaukee, hockey isn’t just a game—it’s a core part of the experience that brings campers together, builds leadership, and offers opportunities for both fun and skill development. Whether your son is stepping onto the rink for high-level training or playing a casual game with friends, our hockey program delivers excitement and growth on every level.

Floor Hockey: Skill, Spirit, and Team Fun

Our on-campus floor hockey program is one of the most popular activities at camp. Played indoors on our hockey court, the program balances competitive energy with a laid-back, spirited atmosphere that’s open to every skill level.

Campers participate in structured sessions once or twice a week with their bunk or age group, rotating through drills, mini-games, and scrimmages that focus on fundamentals like passing, shooting, defense, and movement. It’s a great way to build confidence, improve coordination, and most of all—have fun.

For campers who want a deeper dive, hockey can also be selected as an elective. In this role, older boys have the unique opportunity to help coach and lead younger campers, gaining valuable leadership experience and a deeper understanding of the game. It’s a proud Winaukee tradition that fosters mentorship and responsibility, while strengthening bonds across age groups.

Ice Hockey: For the Serious Player

For those looking to keep their edge during the summer, our ice hockey program offers weekly trips to a local rink, where campers train under experienced coaches in a more intensive environment.

These sessions are designed for campers who play competitively during the year and want to maintain and build on their skills. Training includes power skating, positional drills, puck handling, and scrimmages that mirror in-season intensity—without losing the fun and community spirit that make summer camp so special.

Whether it’s a spirited floor hockey match with bunkmates, a focused ice session, or mentoring younger players as an elective coach, hockey at Winaukee goes far beyond the game. It teaches leadership, resilience, and teamwork—qualities that boys carry with them long after the summer ends. Ashleigh Jackowitz

Ashleigh grew up in Boise, Idaho and got her first taste of sleepaway camp in 2006 when she was hired to work on the waterfront at Camp Walt Whitman. She spent 5 summers there before joining the full-time team in 2012. Ashleigh attended Williamette University in Salem, Oregon as a college athlete in Volleyball. Prior to starting full time in camping, she took the chance to travel around the world, to every continent, over the course of 3 years. Teaching English in South Korea for a year was definitely a highlight! She has been involved with the American Camp Association as a Tri-State Conference Program Track Chair and is a speaker at multiple camp conferences. She also is a passionate advocate of Project Morry, an organization that helps youth from under-served communities attend summer camp, having served for many years on their Dare to Dream Committee. Her favorite role is as mom to their sons Cooper & Henry. Ashleigh, Matt, Cooper & Henry currently live in Ridgefield, CT.
