Escaping the Specialization Trap

How to Balance all of Your Son’s Interests

We are unapologetically a sports camp. Winaukee is known for high-level instruction, intense competition, and a passion for the game. Walk past our fields on any given afternoon, and you will see boys sweating, striving, and playing their hearts out.

But we are also seeing a worrying trend in the world of youth sports: The Specialization Trap.

Boys as young as 7 or 8 are being pushed to pick a “lane.” They are funnelled into travel teams and intensive clinics. The pressure to perform is high, and the room for error is low. By age 12, many boys are already burning out, losing the joy of the game because it has become a job.

Furthermore, if a boy identifies solely as a “soccer player,” he often stops trying other things. He becomes afraid to try tennis or pottery or theatre because he isn’t “good” at them immediately.

The Balance: At Winaukee, we believe in the “Multidimensional Boy.” We believe you can be an intense athlete and a creative soul. In fact, we believe you need to be both to be a healthy, happy young man.

Our program is designed to break the specialization trap.

The Power of Choice

The Mainland (Ages 7-12): We structure the day with a balance of bunk activities and electives. This ensures that the soccer player also goes to the art studio. The artist also gets in the lake.

The Island (Ages 13-15): As they get older, they get 100% elective choice, allowing them to dive deep into their passions—but by then, they have the confidence to choose broadly.

Bravery in Failure

We encourage boys to try things they are bad at. There is nothing braver than a varsity athlete getting up on stage for the camp play, or a quiet boy trying to learn to waterski in front of his peers. That is where character is built.

High-Level Coaching, Low-Stakes Environment

Your son will get top-tier instruction here. He will improve his skills. But the goal isn’t a college scholarship; the goal is growth. If he misses the shot, he is still high-fived by his bunkmates at dinner. The stakes are removed, which allows the love of the game to return.

A Well-Rounded Summer We want your son to come home with a better jump shot, yes. But we also want him to come home with a clay pot he made, a new friendship with someone from a different state, and the knowledge that his worth isn’t tied to a scoreboard.

Let him be an athlete.

Let him be an artist.

Let him be a kid.

Camp Winaukee is proud to be considered one of the best summer camps in America and a top employer for summer jobs and internships.
